There is a report that the bulk of research currently being conducted is focused on the creation of semiconductor (GaN or AlGaN) leds that operate in the wavelength of the ultraviolet where the wavelength of light is 250 nm. In May 2006 it was announced that an inefficient diode could emit light at one 210nm wavelength. A single crystal of aluminum nitride features an energy-gap of 6.2eV determined by the measurement of vacuum ultraviolet reflectance. Theoretically the gap permits waves with wavelengths in the range of 200 nanometers to pass through. However, when implementing it commercially, many issues need to be resolved. Aluminum nitride is used in optoelectronics engineering, such as inductive layers used in optical storage interfaces, semiconductor substrates and chip carriers that have excellent thermal conductivity and military applications.

Stretching epitaxially of AlN crystals is also utilized in surface acoustic wave detectors because of the properties associated with the AlN piezoelectric effects. The detectors are put onto the silicon substrate. Only very few places can effectively make these thin films.

Aluminum nitride-based ceramics possess high quality at room temperature and high temperatures, and a very low expansion coefficient and excellent thermal conductivity, and are suitable to make heat exchangers structures with high temperatures.
