MENLO PARK, Calif. — Facebook announced today the launch of “Pet Community,” a new feature designed to connect pet owners globally. The platform aims to create a dedicated space for sharing pet photos, care tips, and stories. It will be available starting next week across all devices.
The feature allows users to create profiles for their pets, join groups based on animal types, and exchange advice. Pet owners can share updates, organize meetups, and discuss topics like health or training. The tool includes filters to find local pet owners or breeds. A marketplace will let users sell or donate pet supplies.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, said, “Pets are family. This platform helps owners connect and share experiences.†The company noted over 60% of Facebook users own pets, driving demand for specialized communities.
Pet Community will roll out globally in 100 languages. It is free to use and accessible through the Facebook app or website. Parents of dogs, cats, birds, and other animals can join. The platform integrates with existing Facebook Groups but operates as a separate service.
Safety features include reporting tools for harmful content and privacy controls for profiles. Facebook stated moderation teams will monitor activity to prevent scams or misinformation. Users can choose to share posts publicly or only with members.
The launch follows surveys showing pet owners prefer online spaces focused on animals. Similar features exist for parents or hobbyists, but this marks Facebook’s first pet-specific project. Competitors like Instagram offer pet-related content but lack dedicated groups.
Animal welfare organizations partnered with Facebook to promote responsible pet care. Resources from groups like the ASPCA will be available in the platform’s help section. Users can access guides on adoption, vaccinations, and emergency planning.
Testing began in March with 10,000 users. Feedback highlighted interest in breed-specific forums and adoption support. Facebook plans to add live vet Q&A sessions and event calendars in future updates.
